NICU Discharge Instructions:
Vitamin D Supplementation
Why Does Your Baby Need Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is needed to build strong bones. It also helps support a healthy immune system. Because babies do not receive enough vitamin D from breastmilk or formula alone, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a liquid vitamin D supplement for all infants.
Where do I Find Vitamin D Supplements?
Liquid vitamin D supplements do not require a prescription and are available for purchase in stores and on the internet.
How Much Vitamin D Does Your Baby Need?
The AAP recommends giving 400 international units (IU) of vitamin D per day in addition to your baby’s regular feedings.
Tips for Giving Liquid Vitamin D
-
Always follow the directions on the bottle. Use the dropper that comes with the liquid vitamin D to give the right amount. Giving your baby more than what is recommended will not improve their development and could be harmful.
-
If you breastfeed, you can put the drop(s) directly on your nipple before feeding or give them using a clean finger.
-
If you bottle-feed, you can mix the drop(s) with a small amount of milk in a bottle. After the baby has finished the vitamins, you can fill the bottle with the rest of your baby’s feeding.
-
If your baby spits up or vomits with a feeding, you don’t need to give another dose of the vitamins. But if this happens every time you give the vitamins, contact your child’s healthcare provider.
-
If you have any questions, ask your child’s healthcare provider.
