SHC: Orbital Fracture

You have a fracture of the bone outside the eye.  These fractures are caused by trauma to that area.  Some of these fractures need surgery and some do not.

INSTRUCTIONS:

  • Follow up with your doctor(s) as directed.
  • Apply ice packs to the area for 20-30 min every 2-3 hours for 2-3 days after the injury to reduce pain and swelling.  The ice should not be applied directly to the skin.  Use an ice bag and wrap in a towel or washcloth to protect the skin.
  • Avoid blowing your nose, sneezing, drinking through a straw until cleared to do so by your doctor.
  • Wear protective glasses that wrap around your face for 10 days after your injury.

WHEN TO SEEK IMMEDIATE CARE OR CALL YOUR DOCTOR:

  • If you have increasing pain in the eye or with movement of the eye.
  • If you have any decrease in your vision.
  • If the light starts bothering your eyes.
  • If you have clear or bloody fluid running out of your nose or ear.
  • If you have fever >102°F, chills, severe headache or neck stiffness.
